the primary goal of adaptive array sensors is signal enhancement and interference reduction. the vast majority of array processor systems are designed for application in communications engineering. however, they have also been extensively and efficiently employed in military and sonar systems as well. the fundamentals of smart antenna applications are in close correspondence with microphone and speaker arrays in directive sound processing systems and they have also found practical use in geophysical, astrophysical and biomedical engineering as well as in entertainment. the authors are unaware of a very fundamental and basic book which presents the broad aspects of array processing in a general framework. there are many books for very specialised topics such as array antennas in wireless systems, mimo and space time coding, however, a text book for both undergraduate and graduate students with a course in analog and digital signal processing as the sole prerequisite is hard to find. the book is aimed at an introductory level with applications and should be useful for various disciplines of engineering and science.
