Though today he is one of the most overlooked Biblical scholars in Christendom, William Rainey Harper was nevertheless a giant among men in his brief time upon this planet. With a mastery of several ancient and classical languages, primarily Hebrew, Harper sought to establish widespread literacy in the biblical languages and improve the forms and methods of higher education. From his American Institute of Hebrew offering correspondence and summer courses in Hebrew to his efforts establishing the University of Chicago, Bradley University, and William Rainey Harper College, Harper was purposed toward the idea that every American should have available to them some opportunity to engage in the life of the mind. This text is Harper's foundational Hebrew Instruction, reproduced from its 1921 edition.
