The poems are organized under themes such as heritage, seasons, journeying, spirits, and on death and dying. Although the backdrop is mostly Caribbean, the poems have an international flavour because they also reflect on life in North America, Africa, and Europe. In their treatment of issues that are personal, social, historical, and controversial, the poems inform, amuse, stimulate the imagination, and provoke the conscience. They are written in a variety of styles including that of a Petrarchan sonnet but each one is simple, clear, direct, and polished. Small wonder that many have been included in anthologies of poetry in the Caribbean and abroad. The collection includes all the poems that earned the poet the Guyana Prize for Literature for the First Book of Poetry.About AuthorDennis Craig was a Guyanese by birth. A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, and Vice Dean at the University of the West Indies (Jamaica), he has published widely in the field of creole linguistics and education. This poetry book is his first major literary work for which he won the Guyana Prize for Literature in 1998.
