Reseña del libro "A Croatian composer: notes toward the study of Joseph Haydn (en Inglés)"

Was Joseph Haydn truly a German composer, or has musical history placed him in the wrong cultural tradition? This provocative biographical and critical essay challenges the conventional classification of Haydn's ancestry and art, arguing instead for Croatian origins and a distinctly Croatian musical language. Questions of identity become inseparable from questions of sound as the familiar portrait of the composer is reconsidered through ethnological, biographical and musical evidence. Croatian folk music provides the essay's most revealing field of comparison. Haydn's melodies, rhythms, metres and humour are set beside traditional songs and Slavonic dance forms, including the Kolo, while examples of borrowing and adaptation test the argument at the level of musical detail. Rather than resting its case on ancestry alone, the study asks how cultural inheritance may persist in melodic habits, rhythmic movement and compositional character. Its close engagement with song traditions gives the debate a concrete musical foundation. From family origins and personal appearance to religious feeling and professional life at Eisenstadt, the portrait brings several kinds of evidence into conversation. The composer's long association with a Croatian-settled region becomes part of a broader enquiry into how nationality is assigned to artists, and how inherited categories can shape the interpretation of their work. Both music biography and an argument about cultural classification, the essay invites a fresh hearing of Haydn through the history and forms of Croatian folk music. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Read more
