They offer a glimpse of a world now gone, and an insight into preoccupations of that era. Despite the tragedies that befall them and their fundamental differences, these letters show their continuing devotion to each other. They bravely struggle to retain their optimism for the future, as they face the challenges of personal loss and the changes in the wider world.
