Nació en una granja de Minnesota de padres escandinavos. Tras sus estudios primarios y secundarios se alisto en la Navy donde trabajó como técnico en electrónica en un navío de rescate. Al dejar la Navy curso estudios de ingeniería y de teología, consiguiendo tres maestrías y dos doctorados: de la Universidad de Biola, la Universidad de Pepperdine y la Universidad del Estado de Arizona. Antes de entrar en el ministerio cristiano trabajó como ingeniero aeroespacial. Encontró a Cristo mientras cursaba sus estudios asistiendo a un Seminario de Evangelismo de Campus Crusade for Christ. Acabados sus estudios de ingeniería pasó a ocupar una plaza en la multinacional Honeywell, pero a los dos años decidió dejar su trabajo para ingresar en la Talbot School of Theology y dedicarse al ministerio.

Fundador y presidente de «Freedom For Christ Ministries» su especialidad es la «guerra espiritual» y la liberación espiritual, tema sobre el que ha escrito numerosos libros, siendo los que más famoso le hicieron: Victory Over the Darkness, The Bondage Breaker, y The Steps to Freedom in Christ. Posee una larga experiencia pastoral y pedagógica, como director del departamento de teología práctica del Seminario Teológico Talbot de la Universidad de Biola.
