In nine short, unflinching pieces, a father takes stock: the oldest son who vanished from his life and came back a stranger who calls him by his first name; the daughter he tells the truth about, twice; the son who spent thirty years believing his father was dead; the boy who was never his by blood and became his anyway; the son steady enough to hold the rest of the family together; the grandchildren who ask the questions he's still learning to answer; and, near the end, the three women who loved him along the way and the account he finally owes them.
