The young officer of 1857 has become a field commander.
Volume II carries Frederick Roberts through frontier warfare, Abyssinia and the Second Afghan War, where the Kuram Field Force, the fighting at Peiwar Kotal, Charasia, Kabul and Sherpur establish him among the foremost soldiers of the Army in India.
Then comes Maiwand.
Ordered to relieve Kandahar, Roberts leads a selected Anglo-Indian force south from Kabul: 92nd and 72nd Highlanders, 60th Rifles, Pioneers, Sikh and Punjab infantry, Gurkhas, Queen’s Royal Lancers, Bengal and Punjab cavalry, Central India Horse and mountain artillery. Nearly ten thousand fighting men, supported by thousands of followers and transport animals, complete the march of just over 313 miles between 9 and 31 August and enter Kandahar still ready to fight.
On 1 September 1880 they defeat Sardar Mohammad Ayub Khan.
Roberts receives the Grand Cross of the Bath, but the memoir continues beyond fame, through the Madras Army to the office named in its subtitle: Commander-in-Chief in India.
The march made the legend. Command completed the life.
