"Indians of the U.S.from A to Z" is a concise overview of the indigenous people (Native Americans) who have lived in what are now the forty-eight contiguous states of the USA. This volume briefly covers the most important people, tribes, and events -- from colonial times (Pocahontas, Samoset, Squanto, et al) through the tumultuous times of warfare, removals, and treaties (Tecumseh, Red Cloud, Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Geronimo, Chief Joseph, etc.) and beyond. A spotlight is focused on personalities, intrigues, battles, massacres, treaties, laws, and their consequences. More than that, though, "Indians of the U.S. from A to Z" contains poignant quotes from a variety of Indian leaders, including modern-day authors and activists. Additionally, besides the battles, massacres, broken treaties, and such, examples of assistance provided by the Indians to the Euro-Americans are examined, as well as instances of cooperation (e.g., aid to the early colonists (such as the "Pilgrims") and Sacagawea's guidance and interpreting for the Lewis & Clark expedition). Indian contributions to U.S. culture (such as in the arts and sports) are also mentioned. Finally, each entry contains links to further sources of information for those who want to delve deeper into a particular subject.
