Martin Gardner (1914–2010) fue un influyente divulgador científico y escritor estadounidense, reconocido por popularizar las matemáticas recreativas y fomentar el pensamiento crítico. Nació en Tulsa, Oklahoma, y se graduó en Filosofía por la Universidad de Chicago. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, sirvió en la Armada de los EE. UU., y tras la guerra, trabajó como escritor independiente y editor.

Su legado más destacado es su columna mensual "Mathematical Games" en Scientific American, que escribió durante 25 años (1956–1981). A través de esta columna, Gardner introdujo al público en conceptos matemáticos complejos mediante juegos, acertijos y paradojas, haciendo accesibles temas como fractales, teoría de juegos y criptografía. Su estilo claro y ameno inspiró a generaciones de matemáticos y científicos.

Además de su labor en matemáticas, Gardner fue un crítico de la pseudociencia y el pensamiento irracional. Escribió extensamente sobre temas como la astrología, los ovnis y la homeopatía, promoviendo el escepticismo y el método científico.
