In Powers of Horror, Julia Kristeva offers an extensive and profound consideration of the nature of abjection. Drawing on Freud and Lacan, she analyzes the nature of attitudes toward repulsive subjects and examines the function of these topics in the writings of Louis-Ferdinand Céline, Marcel Proust, James Joyce, and other authors. Kristeva identifies the abject with the eruption of the real and the presence of death. She explores how art and religion each offer ways of purifying the abject, arguing that amid abjection, boundaries between subject and object break down.

Es escritora, psicoanalista, miembro del Instituto Universitario de Francia y docente en la Universidad Diderot-París VII, donde dirige la Escuela Doctoral “Lengua, literatura, imagen” y el Centro Roland Barthes. Es doctora de numerosas universidades y miembro de la Sociedad Psicoanalítica de París. Forma parte del Consejo Económico y Social de Francia y es presidenta del Consejo Nacional “Handicap: Sensibilizar, Informar, Formar”. En 2004, recibió el Premio Holberg (Noruega); y en 2006, el Premio Hannah Arendt al pensamiento político (Bremen). Ha escrito una treintena de libros, novelas y ensayos, entre ellos, Extranjeros para nosotros mismos (1988), Los samurais (1992), El genio femenino: Hannah Arendt, Vol. I (1999), Melanie Klein, Vol. II (2003), Colette: un genio femenino (2007).
