Su primera novela, White Teeth (2000), la catapultó al reconocimiento internacional y ganó el James Tait Black Memorial Prize, entre otros galardones. Otras obras relevantes incluyen On Beauty (finalista del Man Booker Prize y ganadora del Orange Prize for Fiction), NW y Swing Time. Smith es miembro de la Royal Society of Literature y profesora de escritura creativa en la Universidad de Nueva York.
