Nació en Yonkers, Nueva York, en 1926. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial sirvió en el Ejército estadounidense, donde contrajo tuberculosis, y al finalizar la guerra trabajó como redactor publicitario y guionista y escribió discursos para Robert Kennedy. Su primera novela, Revolutionary Road, fue elegida finalista del National Book Award en 1962 y adaptada al cine por Sam Mendes en 2008. Yates escribió otras seis novelas y dos conjuntos de cuentos, Once tipos de soledad y Mentirosos enamorados. Dio clases de escritura en las universidades de Columbia, Iowa, Wichita, la Universidad de Alabama en Tuscaloosa y la New School for Social Research, y pasó temporadas en Europa, Los Ángeles y Nueva York. Murió en Birmingham, Alabama, en 1992.
