Confronting an image of Jesus that has prevailed for nearly 2000 years, Gillies elucidates how Jesus, through his teachings and symbolic acts, was striving to free his fellow Jews from religious bondage altogether. The Galilean's design was neither to found a new religion nor even improve on the old. Rather, by portraying his death as a sacrifice willed by YHWH, Jesus' aim was to set the stage for the utter abrogation of the everlasting covenant that bound the Chosen People to their tribal God.
