"Excuse me; I have no desire to be ridiculed as a superstitious dreamer, -nor, on the other hand, could I ask you to accept on my affirmation what you would hold to be incredible without the evidence of your own senses. Edward Bulwer-Lytton (Londres, 1803 – Torquay, 1873) fue un prolífico novelista, dramaturgo y político británico, destacado en el periodo victoriano. Cultivó diversos géneros literarios, incluyendo la novela histórica, el romance gótico y la ciencia ficción. Entre sus obras más reconocidas se encuentra Los últimos días de Pompeya (1834), una novela histórica ambientada en la antigua ciudad romana antes de su destrucción por la erupción del Vesubio. Otras obras notables incluyen Zanoni (1842), La casa y el cerebro (1859) y La raza futura (1871), también conocida como Vril, el poder de la raza venidera.

Bulwer-Lytton es recordado por acuñar frases célebres como "La pluma es más poderosa que la espada" y por la famosa apertura "Era una noche oscura y tormentosa" en su novela Paul Clifford (1830).
