José Donoso, nacido en Santiago de Chile en 1924, es uno de los escritores más influyentes de la literatura chilena y latinoamericana del siglo XX. Su formación académica incluye estudios en la Universidad de Chile y en Princeton, Estados Unidos. Entre 1967 y 1981, residió en España, un período crucial en el que escribió algunas de sus novelas más importantes y se consolidó como una figura central del Boom Latinoamericano.

Sus obras más destacadas incluyen, “Coronación” (1957), “El obsceno pájaro de la noche” (1970) y “Casa de campo” (1978). Donoso fue galardonado con numerosos premios, incluyendo el Premio Nacional de Literatura en Chile, el Premio de la Crítica en España, el Premio Mondello en Italia y el Premio Roger Caillois en Francia. En 1995, recibió la Gran Cruz del Mérito Civil del Consejo de Ministros de España.
Tras su regreso a Chile en 1981, dirigió un taller literario que jugó un papel fundamental en la generación de la “nueva narrativa chilena”. José Donoso falleció en Santiago de Chile en diciembre de 1996.
