In the dead of winter on the Yukon, a solitary trapper finds the unthinkable in a remote river cabin: a husband shot dead, a wife missing, and a child still alive in the frigid silence. Among the wreckage glints a diamond ring no woodsman's wife could ever have owned. The trapper hides the ring, takes the child, and carries the news to the nearest detachment of the Mounted Police.

What follows is a relentless trail across the frozen North - over wind-scoured passes, through forests of stark fire-killed timber, by dog-team and snow-shoe - in pursuit of a brutal fugitive who has vanished into the wilderness. The young sergeant assigned to the case finds himself bound to a courageous young woman whose journey will be tested by the cruel country and by a missionary's tragic journal kept at a lonely outpost known as The Gap.
