The Air force is struggling to get its arms around information technology expenditures, governance of information technology, oversight of information technology, and standards of information technology. The efforts to accomplish this are not integrated or coherent. Current information technology policies and acquisition processes need transformation. Current information technology systems are purchased through a variety of processes with minimal emphasis on standards. Information technology is a means and not an end in itself, and therefore indirectly supports the mission by providing direct support for warfighters. This support and inclusive planning is ensured through the constituent based information technology governance processes. Arguably, interoperability is the key standard information technology professionals strive for. The Air Force needs to give the task of synchronizing these efforts to an organization capable of providing a customer interface and support, technical and acquisition expertise such as SSG.
