Reseña del libro "Virtue in the Age of AI: Book II: Others (en Inglés)"

Artificial intelligence increasingly mediates the ways we judge, classify, advise, employ, care for, persuade, and exercise power over one another. But the more efficiently a machine can reduce a person to a score, category, profile, prediction, or recommendation, the more urgent a distinctly human question becomes: What do we owe the person on the other side of the decision? Virtue in the Age of AI: Others begins where The Self ended. Self-government is necessary for the responsible exercise of power, but it is not sufficient. Once our choices begin to affect other people, character must become relational. The question is no longer only whether we can govern our own judgment, appetite, fear, and ambition. It is whether we can exercise power without losing sight of the human beings our decisions reach. Drawing on classical philosophy, Christian moral thought, modern ethics, history, law, and contemporary research, Others examines three virtues that constrain power in relationship: justice, honor, and compassion. Justice asks what each person is owed and refuses to let favoritism, convenience, institutional interest, or technological efficiency decide whose claims matter. Honor asks what we owe because another person has entrusted us with a role, responsibility, confidence, or vulnerability, and why access, capability, and advantage do not become permission merely because no rule forbids their use. Compassion asks whether the person affected by our decisions remains visible at all, particularly when technology allows suffering, dependence, and human need to be compressed into dashboards, alerts, classifications, and data. Together, these virtues confront one of the central moral risks of artificial intelligence: not that machines will necessarily become indifferent to human beings, but that they will make it easier for human beings to become indifferent to one another. This is not an argument against artificial intelligence. It is an argument against mistaking representation for relationship, prediction for judgment, access for permission, or efficiency for moral adequacy. AI can identify patterns, reveal injustice, preserve information, expand access, and help us care for people at a scale previously impossible. It cannot determine what another person is owed, make us faithful to a trust, or ensure that the human being behind the category remains visible. The central question is not simply whether an AI system is accurate, fair, useful, or lawful. It is whether the people who build, deploy, and rely upon it remain answerable to the people their decisions affect. Others is the second volume of Virtue in the Age of AI, a three-part examination of character, human relationships, and society in a world increasingly shaped by intelligent machines. If The Self asks what kind of person can be trusted with power, Others asks what that person owes once power reaches someone else.
