Reseña del libro "Welding Inspection and Quality Control Handbook: A Practical Field Reference for Weld Defect Identification, Visual and Nondestructive Testing, Acceptance Criteria, and Quality Documentation (en Inglés)"

A welded joint conceals almost everything that determines whether it is sound. The preparation that was cut, the condition of the surfaces when the arc was struck, the temperature of the steel at the moment of welding, whether the root fused or merely bridged: all of it governs the result, and almost none of it can be recovered from the finished weld. That single fact shapes this handbook. This is a working reference for welding inspection, written for the person doing the work. It covers what an inspector is responsible for and what falls outside that responsibility, how the arc processes behave and what each of them characteristically produces, and how to read the documents that define a requirement: the drawing and its symbols, the welding procedure specification and the qualification record beneath it, and the welder's qualification and continuity. It treats visual inspection as a method with conditions rather than as looking carefully, and gives it the space it deserves, because it is the only method applied to every joint. It then works through the surface methods and the volumetric methods, with attention throughout to what each one can reach and, more importantly, what it cannot. A chapter on identifying and classifying discontinuities sits between the methods and the criteria, because classification determines which limit applies. The last part of the book turns observations into determinations and determinations into records. Acceptance criteria are approached as a problem of identification rather than of lookup, since the difficulty is almost never finding a number but establishing which document, which quality level and which acceptance level govern this joint under this method. Documentation and traceability follow, then the quality system that gives an inspector's findings somewhere to land. WHAT IS INSIDE Fourteen chapters covering the inspector's role and authority, the arc processes and their characteristic discontinuities, base metals and consumable control, welding symbols and fabrication drawings, procedure specifications and qualification records, welder qualification and continuity, preheat and post-weld heat treatment, visual inspection method and technique, discontinuity identification and evaluation, surface and volumetric nondestructive testing, acceptance criteria and code interpretation, documentation and nonconformance, and quality systems and audits. Six appendices holding a welding symbol quick reference, a discontinuity reference grouped as the codes group it, working inspection checklists for every stage from documentary review to project close-out, the standards and codes cited with their issuing bodies and editions, reference data including conversions and electrode designations, and ten fully worked determinations that follow the same sequence from observation to record. A glossary of more than one hundred and eighty terms, a references section, and a full index. More than seventy figures: photographs of real fabrication and inspection work, and scale technical drawings of welding symbols, joint preparations, weld cross sections, discontinuity geometry and radiographic arrangements. WHO IT IS FOR The inspector on a fabrication floor, the quality engineer reviewing records, the welding supervisor who needs to know what an inspector will look for, and the candidate preparing for a certification examination who wants the reasoning behind the rules rather than a list of them. It assumes no prior qualification and builds the vocabulary as it goes. This handbook is a general reference. It is not a code, a standard, or a substitute for either, and it confers no qualification. Decisions about the fitness or safety of a welded structure require the governing code, the project specification, and the judgement of appropriately qualified personnel.
