John le Carré, seudónimo de David John Moore Cornwell (1931–2020), fue un novelista británico reconocido por redefinir la literatura de espionaje. Antes de dedicarse plenamente a la escritura, trabajó para los servicios de inteligencia británicos MI5 y MI6 durante la Guerra Fría, experiencia que influyó profundamente en sus obras. Su narrativa se caracteriza por una visión realista y moralmente compleja del espionaje, alejándose de los estereotipos del género. Rechazó premios y distinciones oficiales, aunque fue galardonado con la Medalla Goethe en 2011.

Entre sus novelas más destacadas se encuentran El espía que surgió del frío (1963), El topo (1974), La chica del tambor (1983), El jardinero fiel (2001) y El sastre de Panamá (1996).
